spring is around the corner...

There is such a delay between when I complete the designs for a collection and when it gets to the stores, that I almost forget when new things actually arrive. I was so excited to see some of the spring Hicks Paper Goods collection is now available at Polka Dot. I had so much fun designing it- I hope you like it, too!

rifle design

I'm sure I'm late in the game discovering the brilliance of Rifle Design. I adore the illustrative style, and was thrilled to see she (Anna Bond) is an Orlando resident (just outside my hometown of Winter Park, FL). She even designed a whole suite of wedding items for a Winter Park wedding...the ceremony took place at my rehearsal dinner site. I love making those connections- sometimes the world feels so small!

derby

Whitney and I were honored to be asked to design a collection of invitations for the official Kentucky Derby party website this year. It's the first time we've ever collaborated with another company, and it was fun to do something a little different.

The party website is chock full of great tips for throwing a Derby party, if you've got one planned. Lemontree paperie has the full collection of 'official' invitations, including ones that incorporate this year's Derby logo

on the board

Speaking of invitations, how do you display yours? I kept mine in a folder for a while, but would find myself forgetting events. So I tried to do a nice display on a white magnet board, that has now turned into a mish-mash of everything- not the neat ensemble I had envisioned. The 'pretty' invitations I leave up way past the actual event...do you find yourself doing the same thing?

The green one is an HPG design, the yellow square and moving announcement are from graphic designer Laura Crookston Deleot, and the orange fabric one was done by a costume-designer friend, Erin Korey Proud.

spring is here!

No- not officially here (it's cold and rainy in Nashville), but I can see the beginnings now that the HPG spring line has started to hit the websites! A couple of my new favorites, above. From top: robot, candle cake, blue coral, fiesta hat, cupcakes, and lattice table.

new stuff!

The new stuff from this year's NSS is finally making its way to the stores! I was so thrilled to see these HPG selections on Paper Buzz (I pulled a couple of favorites).

choosing an invitation

Invitations are often the first thing that get decided for a party. They generally set the tone for the celebration...whether to convey a mood (think dressy casual supper), define a theme (like the dog days of summer) or establish a color palette. That's why they can be one of the most exciting (and stressful) parts of party-planning!

Some people set out to buy an invitation with an idea of what they are looking for. Others decide the direction of the party based on the chosen invitation. And for those crafty few with a very definite opinion(who don't mind spending some extra hours), they make their invitation!

Amy's party already has a couple of key things established, including: 1) the 'where' (their house) and 2) the 'what' (dog days of summer 1 year old birthday party). Her son, Jack, is in love with their family dog, Otto, who is a dalmation-mix. My guess is that Amy will want to incorporate Otto into the celebration, and may even have him serve as the mascot! Since dalmations already come with a preset color palette (black and white...and often fire-engine red), it gives Amy an opportunity for an 'easy button' color scheme.

in the mood...

for cupcakes! I can't get my mind off that giant cupcake from yesterday's post. In search of all things cupcake, I came across these paper-based beauties. Not quite as great as the real thing, but a close 2nd. From top: Snow & Graham cupcake wrapping paper, Hicks Paper Goods' cupcake buffet invitation, Sprinkles cupcake invitation, and Boatman Geller enclosure card
