i was just thinking about how an airplane themed birthday would be fun. plane ticket invitations, "airplane food" in little trays, kids could play with remote control planes or helicopters. i guess it depends on what he is into...dinosaurs? trucks? pirates? and anything can have an arts and crafts element to it for the kids. in our area there is a big merry go round, a bbq next to the merry go round could be fun...
This time of year is great for a baseball themed party, either at a local field or batting cages.
We had a wii bowling tournament for my son's 9th birthday this past January. It was a family party, so the age range was 2- 77 and absolutely everyone had fun!
Mad Scientist theme is great for that age group. You can have them make slime and do some other simple science experiments.
Olympics theme with an outdoor decathalon event would be fun and keep the kids busy.
Oh, I almost forgot this one! We did an ipod/product (red) themed party for my son's 8th birthday that was a big hit. We had an ipod shaped cake (very easy!), obviously played music and decorated with garlands of musical notes and red streamers.
The favors were product (red) leather bracelets from the Gap and we just played lots of music, the kids had an impromptu dance competition and I think they may have played a wii singalong game. This was also a family party and appealed to all ages.
I read about a "backwards" party like this one somewhere and thought it would be really fun for that age group- you could make it as complicated or simple as ou wanted:
I have to agree with Pumpkin Petunia on the great timing for a baseball theme. Go old-timey and have peanuts and cracker jacks on a snack table!
And definitely think of anything and everything he's into. Army men? Go camoflauge tablecloths and figure out your own MREs (Meals Ready to Eat). There's tons of ideas in his head, I'm sure.
How about a rocket themed party? They could make alkaseltzer rockets and launch them. Cake would be easy, and decor anything space themed. Favors would be their rocket, maybe some science goggles, and some glow in the dark stars?
Party Perfect is an inspirational blog dedicated to parties, entertaining, and all things fun!

The jedi in training party over at one cool pic from one cool chick looked super fun!
How about an outdoor survival skills theme?
You could have them eat (gummy) worms and build forts and build a campfire.
