reader question of the week #1

reader question of the week #1:

"I recently realized that I have only 2 short weeks to plan a 30th birthday party for my girlfriend! It will be outside, I would like to serve a meal, my girlfriend is pregnant (so no booze at this shindig), and the budget is somewhat limited, since there will be at least 25-30 guests. Any help would be great- thanks! -Rhonda"

You could make lasagnas. It is not too expensive and you can make it in advance. You serve and appetiser first and a big green salad with the lasagnas. You can also have a chili buffet. Make a great chili, or two one with carne and the other one vegeterian and have all the toppings ready (tomatoes, cheddar, avocado, ...) for dessert a big birthday cake or cupcakes. Choose a color and color match your party.

I would suggest casseroles, like lasagna or quiches. You can make them ahead of time and for little cost you can feed a lot of people. I recently did a baby shower and got bulk drink at Sam's Club (we did Izze's) then used scrap fabric to make little coozies to dress them up to go with the color scheme. It's an inexpensive way to add a nice touch. Also, since it's summer, for desert you could just pick up some fresh berries and serve with a pound cake and cream.
