weekend project (baby photo albums)

This was actually a project that lasted several weekends, but I officially got it off my to-do list this weekend, and I couldn't be happier! I've been meaning to do albums periodically, as my son grew up. However, time slipped away (as it always does!) and it never happened. I told myself if I didn't get the albums done before baby #2 arrives, then it would never happen. So with the help of iphoto (a Mac application) and some time, I managed to edit the thousands of photos down to several hundred. It's been bittersweet to look back and see how much my baby has grown in the past 19 months. Such a whirlwind. Anyway, I am feeling so accomplished and ready to tackle the rest of my long list of projects! For those of you that don't have Macs, it looks like blurb.com (thanks, Whitney!) is a good alternative.

Great photo books. I love that you switch between black and white & color but always in a pattern. I also love to use iPhoto to make books, I just wish they offered more coupons and discounts like Shutterfly or other similar photo book printers. I have a question...did you just make one photo book for the first 18 months or break it up by subject or some other category? Thanks for sharing...

hey melissa- I agree! Sometimes I've stumbled upon a discount they're offering by chance (when you click the 'order' button), but they don't advertise it, and the discounts seem rare... I certainly didn't get one when I did these. They're pricey, as you know!

I divided them into 4 groups- only b/c based on the amount of photos I had, it made the most sense. 1) coming home from the hospital and the first month; 2) 1-6 months; 3) 6-12 months; 4) 12-18 months.

Hope that is helpful! -s

Love it. What a great looking album. (And what a sweetie of a subject.) You've inspired me to try to do the same with our son's photos before baby #2 arrives. Hmm... now what to do about the folders upon folders of photos that ended up on different laptops?

lovely!! I have so many pictures to wade through myself!! i'm trying to get my husband on this task as HE is the main photographer in the house. Baby #3 has had the most trouble getting out of our computer - NONE on our walls yet. seriously unacceptable.

Inspired once again!! thanks!

I've been doing this with my son too. He's almost six now. You will be so glad you did this!

I use different size books for different subjects. I always use the big size in hardcover for each year, and I use the medium size to document parties, events and family vacations. I also try to use the same layouts and fonts for consistency.

There is a great photo album handcrafted by LAIKONIK. It's called the Once-A-Year book and folds out accordian style for 18 years. its so simple and visually beautiful. I'm planning to photograph my son is the same spot over the 18 year span.
Here is the website:

With three boys, I love the simplicity of this album!
