reader question of the week #1

"My girls are turning 10 in June and I'm at a loss as to what to do for them. For some reason when it comes to my boy I have plenty of ideas but ... at the moment all I have is a painting party, with a brush as the one for the cake and the finger palette as the 0 and the rest is a blur. I see mini painting easles with mini water color palettes for favors but that's it. And I don't even know if you can get mini painting palettes!!! aaaarrgghh! Could you please give me some inspiration!!? -Catherine (frazzled mother of four)"

My son is a lot younger, but we were thinking of doing a paint party as well, and there are so many different ways to paint. Spray paint using powder tempura and spray bottles from the dollar store, and a huge sheet, or piece of paper covering the fence. Darts at balloons full of paint, fabric paint - maybe on an art smock, or painters cap(they can be found on line plain white)I know our dollar store has paint pallets. I hope this helps.

this might be too ambitious for you, but when i was ten i had a sleepover painting party, where my friends and i all painted pictures on one wall of my bedroom. to prep, my mother painted frames by putting a placemat on the wall and painting around it. then she bought colors that all matched the color scheme of the room. we had a planning session where she asked us to sketch out what we were going to paint, and then we painted our pictures in the framed areas. my family members all painted pictures later on too. it was a great memory.

My seven year old just had an art party at the beginning of the month. There were some resources online but the rest I had to make do with what I could find locally. I'm about to do a post on my blog with the details later on so if you'd like to visit, I'm at carlafelix.tumblr.com :)

My daughter turned 10 in September...to go along with your "art theme" for dessert we did a chocolate and white chocolate fondue....the girls absolutely LOVED it. You could try that...in making "artwork" with the desserts. You could also prepare a paint palette with sauces like raspberry, strawberry, chocolate etc for them to dip their treats into....

Hi Catherine,

Saw these cupcakes and wished I had them at my son's art party. Maybe you can use it http://www.amysedarisrocks.com/recipes.htm#amy
