reader question of the week #2:
"My husband and I are having a Vintage Vegas/ Martini Lounge birthday party. I am struggling with the centerpieces for the dinner/poker tables. I don't want to spend a ton of money on them because they will not be visable once the poker starts, but want them to make a statement upon entrace to the house. Also, any other ideas for decor for my house? I am thinking silver, blue-turquoise and white for the martini lounge feel. Thoughts? Thanks! -Jennifer"

These large novelty martini glasses might be fun. You could fill them with candy, nuts, or even poker chips. I found them online for about $15/piece

I was just going to suggest martini glasses, too. If you could find (or even make - depending on how much time and your skill level) oversized poker chips (like the size of dinner plates) you could stack a few of those up and place the martini glass on top of those, fill them with chocolate poker chips/coins and attach a faux olive and toothpick to give it all height.
Go to a bookstore and check out the fabulous entertaining book "Party Confidential." On p.98 there's a super creative & chic poker night party that includes decor, food, music, and even strategies for setting up a poker table. Vintage Vegas brings to mind the Frank Sinatra song “Luck Be a Lady.” If you are going for a vintage Vegas feel you’ll need Rat Pack music. You could even make your party theme Lady Luck. New or vintage high heels with playing cards and feather plumes would make stunning centerpieces. Las Vegas is known for money and women. Ice Blue Martinis or Blue on Blue Martinis would match your color palette. You could even make Poker chip drink charms so that guests can keep up with their drinks. Martini lounges are always low lit. It would be nice to have lighting at each table. An inexpensive way to create a soft light is to create tubes in various heights using translucent paper (similar to a hurricane lamp) and then place battery powered tea lights in the center of each one. They create a nice glow, a small flicker and a really nice mood. If you went with the Lady Luck theme, you could print female silhouettes on the translucent paper before creating the tubes.
I think that glass, cylinder vases with a couple of large feather plumes (vegas reference) would make a big impact for very little expense. Then you could add some votives for mood lighting or uplight the vases with the feathers.
