reader question of the week #2

reader question of the week #2:

"My husband was recently laid off, and his birthday is in a couple of weeks. I wanted to have a small party to celebrate and cheer him up, but what are some ways to do this inexpensively? Thanks for your help! -Stephanie"

Create a theme for the menu and have it pot luck!

My fav cheap and fun birthday parties: Bleacher seats at your local baseball arena, find out which night at the bowling lanes is "dollar night" (many fun themed ideas there), have people over for a ping-pong or wii tournament and have "awards" - or something we do with our friends every Friday night - "Park Night": everyone brings food for their own family (KFC, pizza, burgers...) and everyone eats and plays at the park.

I agree with a themed dinner party or cookout and have it potluck. I have done appetizers-only (finger foods) dinner party where all the guests brought their favorite appetizers. I'm doing an "iron chef" type party where I'm going to announce the ingredient 2 days before the party and the dishes that people will bring will incorporate that ingredient. We have had pizza nights where we provided the pizza dough and people brought in their fave toppings to make and share.

If you'd like to serve adult beverages, making a few different flavors of punch is the way to go. Borrow a large punch bowl or several pitchers and find great recipes online that match up with your husbands favorite flavors.
