schultüte!

I came across this post on a German tradition called Schultüte that I just adore!

A Schultüte, or 'School Cone' is also known as a Zuckertüte or 'sugar bag.' When children in Germany set off for their first day in school upon entering first grade, their parents and/or grandparents present them with a big cardboard cone...prettily decorated and filled with toys, chocolate, candies, school supplies and various other goodies. It is given to children to make this anxiously awaited first day of school a little bit sweeter.

I think we need to adopt this tradition in America! What a fun way to celebrate the first day of school.

Oh I love these. I did a post back in September on the one we give our daughter. We started the tradition last year when she started kindergarten. She loves it!

My wife is German and made one for our first daughter when she entered first grade...4 years later she has started a company to bring this tradition to the U.S. I love the thought of making by hand and the personal touch that goes with it. Reality is that convenience is big, so hers, which she's branded KinderCone, comes with a journal that kids fill out during their first year, a plush toy, Karli the cat who is the companion in the book, some pencils and temporary tattoos. The cone is made in Germany of recycled paper and we incorporated a loop to hang it with and we hope it can become a tradition to make the first day special for all school age kids, like a stocking on Christmas. She also sells them empty and blank for those who wan to add their own personal touch. www.kindercone.com is her sight and there is a short video on YouTube under KinderCone comes to America.
