reader question of the week #1

"I'm co-hosting a poolside bridal shower for my best friend at the Hotel Valley Ho in Scottsdale, and the space is fabulously retro. To keep with that theme, I'd like to do something that has sort of a late 1950s/early 1960s California cool vibe. Like that episode of "Mad Men" where Don Draper disappears to California. I've been desperately scouring stores and sites with no luck for party favors and decorations. Any suggestions or ideas -- either something I could put together myself or something I could buy pre-made -- would be SO appreciated. Thanks! -Lauren"

Here is a Palm Springs wedding (could be adapted to fit a shower) held at a hotel with a similar vibe to the Hotel Valley Ho (I've been there - it's great!)

Love the decor, and the succulents would be a nice modern favor. Of course, if you go more with the Mad Men theme - mini cocktail shakers!!

Oh, thanks! And the mini plotted succulents are such a great idea for a takeaway.

Vintage cocktail stirrers/swizzle sticks would also be fun. A quick google search shows them readily available. A small goodie bag with retro, hard-to-find chips, candy and sodas (jn glass bottles) would be simple to put together and definitely carry the theme.

BTW, if you’re looking for menu inspiration, this one looks fantastic: http://www.ezrapoundcake.com/archives/3993

i recently saw vintage style gum i stores for 35 cents a pack (clove gum, beemans gum, etc). i saw it at the christmas tree shops but im sure you can find it online if necessary. in fact a lot of regular grocery items have been doing limited editions of older pacagings. i have seen vintage hersheys and reeses as well as sodas and cereals. it might be worth it just to walk through the whole grocery store.

another tip would be to look through vintage photo websites for pictures of parties from that era. luckily decorations tended to be simpler in that era. dont forget to snap some black and white photos of the party!
