reader question of the week:
"I am having a Cookie Monster party for my daughter turning 2, Cookie Monster (and cookies) are her favorites! My concern is that there is a lot of blue and brown going on, I don't want the party to look too masculine. I am using white plates (I don't do disposables, I prefer to use real plates.) I am making some blue tissue balls to hang around and maybe some blue and white flowers, but any other ideas on how I can make it a little more girly? Thanks! -Megan"

Hi, it sounds so fun! You could do cookies in pink and do cookie party favors in pink also or pink packaging for them. Good luck!!
i don't see why you need to make the party any more "girly"
for a two year old who loves cookie monster, that sounds about perfect!
i totally disagree about the pink.
What if brown (or white) became your primary color and the 'cookie blue' was more secondary? There's no reason you need to dash everything with that primary blue...think of it as your accent color. Brown + white could easily be made more 'feminine' with dots, stripes, etcetera in that palette.
get some white carnations and put some blue food coloring in the vase and set them up around the party... when you are making the pom poms you could also do shales of pale blue to dark blue with some whites and browns thrown in... honestly i don't think you need to make it too girly, everyone will know she is a girl ;) I think your party sounds perfect and cute!
Hi...I love the idea- I think you should use different tones of blue, incorporated the white and just use the brown as an accent color...in dots, stirpes or a background color :) Have Fun!
I love the cookie monster theme..If you wanted you could easily incooperate another color by making some cookie jars(take glass jars from the dollar store and take a piece of cardstock with COOKIES printed on it and roll up to fit down in jar. When it unrolls it should fit perfect) to display around the party. You could use the accent color for the napkins, silverware, etc. I think yellow with red lettering is in a lot of the cookie jar pics of cookie monster and they also use yellow as a background in a lot of the pictures of cookie monster you can find to download. Good luck with your party. I'm sure you will have a great party.
I think you can add a feminine touch by incorporating softer materials like ribbon and layers cloth linens. You may be able to tie blue satin bows onto some of your serving pieces or items you're already planning to use during the party. You're definitely on the right track with the tissue pom poms. Would love to see pictures from your party!!!
I did a cookie monster "ice cream" party for my daughter in december! so fun!! you can look at my photos on my flickr site if you want. we had the party at a local ice cream place and all the "make your own" toppings were cookies.

I also don't see why the party needs to be more feminine. Could you articulate your reasons for us a little bit? A brown and blue cookie monster party sounds wonderful. Why can't a child have a party that's just a party, without having to take the occasion to remind her of her gender.
I agree with the comment of incorporating more feminine touches such as ribbons and fabric. Also adding patterns to the mix—polka dots, stripes, really graphic, bold flowers in a brighter/lighter aqua hue may be a way to add more girly touches. The aqua contrasted with the darker cookie monster blue could help brighten it up as well (if you are using the darker cookie monster). Maybe also integrating a more feminine typeface throughout the elements—invitations, garlands, cards, etc.
I really don't know why brown and blue are 'masculine'.
I think adding pink is a terrible idea as it will confuse the theme.
I would suggest adding more white (carnations to match pom poms is a fantastic idea). White will really brighten the place up as well.
Have fun!
don't worry about it. but if you feel very strongly, just add some pink ribbon to your party favors or hang the tissue paper balls with pink ribbon. Instead of pink, you could use the brown/white/blue colors still but in feminine materials like eyelet, pompom, ruffles, scalloped edges, polka dots, etc.
Make it a cookie decorating party, and have the little girls wear white ruffled aprons which they can take home as their party favor. Little girls in ruffled aprons will "girly" up the party.
Then, get simple white aprons for the boys (you can find the fairly inexpensive on restaurant uniform supply sites.
incorporate another "girly" color like pale pink or lilac! brown and lilac are fabulous together but pink would go well too. you can do it with napkins, silverware, etc!
I have a friend who makes Cookie Monster costumes for girls and they're A-Dorable!

If it was my girl, I would just dress her up and I think it'd be enough girly :)
you could maybe mix in some pink and a lighter shade of blue. Maybe even some red would make cute a bit more girly.
Now-a-days blue isn't such a boy only color, but I do understand the need to make it more girly, especially for little girls.
A few touches here and there of pink would be really cute and add just enough girlyness to the party!
Good luck!
