reader question of the week #2

reader question of the week #2:

"My good friend's husband has been in Iraq for the past year and will be returning home next month(yippee!!!), so she is planning a "welcome home" party for him.  Just wondering if you have any thoughts on  decor/centerpieces?  I am usually a very creative person when it comes to party planning, but, I am stuck on this one.  I would appreciate any help! -Lisa"

Concern- Did she make sure her husband is okay with a party? Being a military wife... I know for sure mine would not! At least not for 2-3wks after his return, he would want to spend time with me and visit his family.

Other than that... what does he like? Sports, fishing, hunting? Since it's his party... cater it to him. The other option is to make it Americana, red-white-blue, God Bless the USA, Thanks for serving, etc.

Welcome home sir!

I imagine family is the greatest thing he missed. Maybe take/use some nice black and white shots of the family, kids, loved ones, and use those as the main focus of the decorations. Simple garlands of black and white photos (printed on an uncoated paper), confetti, cupcake picks made with the pictures as well.

Maybe select one or two colors to use through out for balloons, plates, napkins. I would say something cheerful, fun blues/greens/yellows. Something with optimism and joy.

In the end it comes down to sharing time with the ones you love. Keeping it simple and heartfelt goes a long way.

I'm a couple weeks late on this one, but I have this party from Hostess with the Mostess bookmarked for a welcome home party for my husband when he gets back from Iraq next summer.

I'll adapt to Khaki and Green cuz it's more Army, and frame black and white pictures of him in the Army.
