I went to a 1st birthday party that was garden/fairy themed and each child was given fairy wings to wear and got their face painted to look like a butterfly. It was precious!

If it is for a girl I love the garden fairy theme that is mentioned above. If the party is for a boy I'm thinking more of garden creatures like worms, turtles, frogs, etc. Either way you could have a table setup to pot your own plant and maybe paint a pot activity or you could have seed bags as favors. If you are having at your home you could plant a tree and make a time capsule to bury under it for the little one. Lots of flowers everywhere for little girls and lots of vegetables/garden creaturess and gardening stuff for little boys(I'm thinking plastic wheelbarrows, rakes, shovels, etc). Would be cute to serve the drinks in a plastic wheelbarrow. Straw Hats would be cute for the party hats. For girls you could dress them up with silk flowers. If you have a sand box you could "plant" several silk flowers and the kids could "pick" them and you could have a number on one of them to give a prize.

if you go with a face painter, I had mine personalize sand buckets and shovels with the guests names as favors. The "dirt cake" -pudding topped with crushed oreos & gummy worms is popular. You could have an insect wrangler, release butterflies or lady bugs. Sun umbrellas are also cute favors.

Please so not make the party a gender fixated one like Hope is writing about! Girls and boys both love fairies and worms!
