reader question of the week #2

reader question of the week #2:

"Every year I volunteer for a charity table setting luncheon and I am in my last couple weeks of planning. This year my theme is based around school and I always try to go over the top with details. I plan on cafeteria trays, dunce cap, hall pass, chalkboard tabletop (or something else), pop quiz, oilcloth sack lunch favors, etc. I am looking for out of the box ideas, napkin rings, glassware, centerpieces, unexpected additions, anything. I like to use things unexpectedly, but also mostly things I can do myself due to expenses. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated-Thank you! -Amber"

For a napkin ring, attach a pink eraser (the classic, rectangle one) to a simple plastic ring and tuck a #2 pencil in with the napkin. For a centerpiece, I picture stacking classic children's books and including red apples. Amorology Weddings did a school themed wedding. Go to the website: http://amorologyweddings.com/ click on Gallery and it's the Teacher's Pet wedding.

What about making badges for the guests and attaching these to the napkins. These can be exactly like the ones you wear at school: PREFECT, CAPTAIN, CHOIR, MONITOR etc. Or make ones inspired by year book phrases: Most likely to succeed, Most likely to be president, most popular etc. You could incoporate these into a self service photo booth! IKEA have great candles in the shape of apples. USe milk bottles as vases.

You could use flash cards or book markers as place cards. If you use flash cards for the place cards, put random, fun facts on them and use that for your 'pop quiz.' Also, if you use a chalk board for a table, leave chalk on there so people can write on it.

you could buy those minuature composition notebooks, sometimes you can get them three for a dollar. also buy a pad of that handwriting paper with the guide lines printed on it. it would be great for signs and placecards, and definitely takes you back to school.

For the tablecloths, you can actually buy oilcloth that is able to be written on with chalk. Tablemarkers could include cards such as A is for Apple as are found in many school classrooms. Good luck!

I am so appreciative of all these great ideas. The two links have been very helpful. I am rethinking my plan now because even just bits and pieces of these suggestions are tweaking into new ideas for me. That is the fun part and the hard part... narrowing, eliminating and deciding on the final vision. Luckily I still have 5 weeks so I can play around a lot with this. One of the ladies in charge always stresses over me, but I work best this way and I always come through. Don't forget, I will post photos in late October about the luncheon. Thanks to all of you so far!
