reader question of the week #2

Looks like a lot of water-themed birthday questions this week. Trusty readers, I hope you can give Diana and Rebekah some great ideas!

reader question of the week #2:

"My daughter is turning 1 on the 22nd of August.  She loves the water and I was wondering if you had any ideas on what I should have for a beach or pool theme party (from invitations to food).  I have two little pools for the kids and also bought some beach balls (ages 6 months old to 3 years old). Please help me I want this birthday party to be special... oh by the way I'm planning to do this party at my house (backyard). Thanks so much! Diana"

instead of goodie bags, give each guest her own little beachy sand pail personalized with her name (a sharpie works just fine.) fill with fun summertime stuff like bubbles, sidewalk chalk, squirt toys, sunglasses, moonsand, etc :)

My son's 4th birthday was in June, and we did a "beach boy" themed pool party! Check it out here:

Also, I had recently had a request for a purple-themed pool party, and designed these bikini invitations to incorporate the purple! http://tomkatstudio.blogspot.com/2009/07/invitations-purple-birthday-party.html

Cheers!

Water themes for little girls almost begs for a mermaid party. You can decorate with blue toned mosquito nets and hang from the circle top, Star fish and sea creatures. Also put sequence or crystals glued down the sides to create shimmer. Have the little ones dress up as mermaids too. vases filled with flowers submerged in water adds color. party favor of beautiful decorated cookies in sea shapes. Good luck!

my sister just did this for her daughter's 2nd birthday. she made cupcakes and made the icing blue. then, she placed gummy octopuses on top of the cupcakes. she bought decorative sand to put on the tray to serve the cupcakes. it was adorable!

I have been wanting to throw a "tide-pool" inspired party - I am going to be posting an DIY octopus streamer on my blog soon... Bring the tide-pool to your backyard with pools and sand and hide shells and starfish for collections with the pail idea...sand-inspired cupcakes (roll them in raw sugar) and plop an umbrella on top...!!!

These cupcakes would be perfect. http://krystinaevans.blogspot.com/2009/06/swimming-party-cutest-cupcakes.html. My sister-n-law made them. She also saw the idea of using beach balls as invitations for a swimming party. Inflate the ball, write the info, deflate and mail. Fun for the Kiddos!

My sister and I threw a surfer party for our boys when they turned 1. For decorations we borrowed lots of little boy's swim trunks and hung them on lines with a few surf boards around the yard. If this is for a girl you could do little swim suits.

And I made a sheet cake into a surf theme by making a surfboard in the middle of it, with water on the top and sand (crushed up graham crackers on white frosting) on the bottom. It even had a shark's fin in the water (graham cracker with frosting) and a frosting crab in the sand.

Hope that helps!

One of my customers recently created a crab and bubbles themed party around an invitation she found on Etsy from SweetWishesStore, which is super cute.

To match, I created some personalized mini bubbles for the favors and "Happy Birthday" banner.
