mini coated apples

I spotted this cute idea for mini caramel apples in Family Fun this month. The key to the technique is using a melon ball scoop on a regular-sized apple, then coating the 'exposed' part of the apple with caramel (or chocolate would be good, too!). I don't think the photo styling does the idea justice. How cute would these be lined up on a bright colored tray and passed around at a baby shower or birthday party?

update: look at reader comments for great suggestions for how to really make these work! Thank you, dear readers.

They're totally adorable, but they don't work. The coating slides off because of the juice in the apple. I did do these with mini apples that still had the skin on & they were really just as cute (http://dashislittle.blogspot.com/2007/10/halloween-thus-far.html)

Actually, the key with these mini "apples" is NOT to use caramel. The caramel doesn't stick well to the wet apple surface. The recipe calls for melted butterscotch or pb chips, which I would think might stay put once hardened. It's cute enough that I may give it a shot. I wonder how far in advance you can make these...

I made these today and had no problem. The recipe tells you to dry off the apple before dipping it ... I dabbed it with a dish towel and then dipped the apple in melted butterscotch chips and rolled them in sprinkles. They were easy and worked great!
